CUBA IN THE ANTARCTIC
Cuba, the small Caribbean country, has the glory that some of its scientists have reached the distant South Pole. The first Cubans to arrive in that frigid region were the Geography Doctor Julio Pérez Pérez, a specialist in radiolocation, and his colleague and friend, Master in Sciences Valentín Fernández Martínez, an expert on environmental pollution, on January 1, 1982 as part of the Soviet expedition number 28. Later, three other expeditions were attended by Cuban scientists.
Cuba, el pequeño país del Caribe tiene la gloria de que algunos de sus científicos hayan alcanzado el lejano Polo Sur. Los primeros cubanos en arribar a esa gélida región lo fueron el Doctor en Ciencias Geográficas Julio Pérez Pérez, especialista en radiolocalización, y su colega y amigo Máster en Ciencias Valentín Fernández Martínez, experto en contaminación ambiental, el 1 de enero de 1982 como parte de la expedición soviética número 28. Más tarde otras tres expediciones contaron con la presencia de científicos cubanos.
